Vanesa Lopez ’06 didn’t just graduate from Metropolitan State University of Denver, she carried its mission forward. Today, as a Dean of Students, Lopez leads with the same values that first drew her to 91°µÍř access, equity and student-centered support.

Her path from undergraduate student to higher education leader reflects the university’s commitment to creating opportunity and advancing social mobility for students from all backgrounds.

Choosing Opportunity in the Heart of the City

Lopez chose 91°µÍř because it offered what she needed most: access to a high-quality education in an inclusive, supportive environment.

“I was drawn to 91°µÍř’s strong commitment to accessibility, diversity and real-world learning,” Lopez said. “The affordability, combined with academic quality and its downtown Denver location, made it the right fit.”

The university’s urban campus placed her steps away from internships, career connections and cultural experiences.

An Academic Experience That Built Confidence

Lopez graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a minor in International Business, a combination that reflected her interest in language, global engagement and business.

Her time at 91°µÍř was both challenging and transformative.

“I grew academically and personally,” she said. “I learned how to manage responsibilities, collaborate with diverse classmates and push myself outside my comfort zone.”

Her favorite courses focused on diversity and business and stood out for their real-world application. Rather than rote memorization, classes emphasized discussion, critical thinking and problem-solving, hallmarks of 91°µÍř’s focus on academic excellence.

One professor in particular left a lasting impression.

“Mr. Broggi in the Spanish department created an environment where students felt heard and supported,” Lopez said. “That mentorship shaped how I approach learning and problem-solving even today.”

Campus Resources That Made a Difference

Like many Roadrunners, Lopez balanced coursework with other responsibilities. She credits 91°µÍř’s student-centered resources with helping her stay on track.

Academic advising, tutoring, career services, student organizations and library spaces all played a role in her success. Just as important were the informal moments such as studying in quiet spaces, collaborating with classmates and grabbing coffee between classes in the downtown campus environment.

Those experiences reinforced a sense of belonging and connection, a key element of student persistence and success.

A Career Rooted in Student Success

After graduation, Lopez built a career in education and student affairs, working directly with students and gaining firsthand experience supporting their academic progress and well-being.

Over time, she moved into leadership roles, managing programs, collaborating across departments and helping shape campus policies. Her passion for advocacy, conflict resolution and inclusive systems ultimately led her to her current role as Dean of Students.

In that position, Lopez works to ensure students have access to resources, can navigate challenges effectively and feel connected to their campus communities.

“What’s most meaningful is seeing the full student journey, from moments of challenge to moments of achievement,” she said. “Being able to remove barriers and shape systems that support student success is incredibly rewarding.”

Living the Mission Beyond Graduation

Lopez sees a direct connection between her 91°µÍř experience and her professional values.

“The diverse and inclusive environment helped me develop cultural awareness, empathy and strong interpersonal skills,” she said. “Those qualities are essential in student affairs leadership.”

Her work reflects 91°µÍř’s mission in action—expanding access, supporting academic achievement and advancing social mobility through education.

She remains connected to the university by attending events, mentoring students and advocating for 91°µÍř’s commitment to student success.

Advice for Today’s Roadrunners

Lopez encourages current students to take full advantage of what 91°µÍř offers.

“Get involved. Use your resources. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone,” she said. “Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.”

Most importantly, she reminds students to stay focused on their purpose.

“Your journey may not always be linear, and that’s OK,” Lopez said. “Being a Roadrunner means being determined, adaptable and forward-moving.”
